Congratulations to Carolyn Conrad On July 1, 2000, Carolyn Conrad and Kathleen Peterson got a Civil Union license from their town clerk and then entered into Vermont's first Civil Union. By doing this, they also became the first couple in the United States to enter into a Civil Union. Carolyn Conrad, 29, Associate Dean of Students at Marlboro College, and Kathleen "KP" Peterson, 41, a lift electrician at Mount Snow Ski Resort, recited their vows in a ceremony attended by about a hundred people. The couple, who have a five-year relationship, had already participated in a commitment ceremony a few years ago, but wanted to participate in a civil union that had a legal effect. Brattleboro Town Clerk Annette Cappy had opened her office late Friday night to hand out the first Civil Union license to the couple. Marlboro Justice of the Peace T. Hunter Wilson, a Marlboro College professor, gave the vows. Rep. Gordon Bristol, R-Brattleboro, who supported the civil unions legislation, came to witness the historic event, even though he didn't know the two women. Gay-Civil-Unions.com wishes to congratulate Carolyn and KP and extend its best wishes for a long and happy future as America's first legally united same-sex couple. We also wish to acknowledge the ground-breaking contributions made by Annette Cappy, Town Clerk, and T. Hunter Wilson, Marlboro Justice of the Peace.
